Rotational Physician Associates

This page contains information that is specific to PAs in rotational posts only. For general PA information please see our Physician Associate tab. The rotational PA post provides a good generalist background, ensures exposure to a range of clinical skills, as well as provides a solid foundation upon which to decide where you might want to work permanently upon completion of the two years.

Rotational PAs are currently line managed by Medical Education Manager, Kate Talmage, so that your support is centralised whilst you are rotating through different teams. Please see below specific information about how this relationship will work around certain areas.

Annual Leave

  • You are entitled to 202.5 hours annual leave per calendar year plus bank holidays, which for the 2023-2024 financial year is 75 hours.

  • When booking annual leave, please approach whoever is responsible for your department’s rota. If they approve your request, you will then need to book the dates on Allocate, the Trusts rostering system (also known as Healthroster or Employee Online). Your request will sometimes (depending on which roster you are placed on) come through to the PGMC team as a ‘tick box’ approval exercise and for us to be aware of annual leave balances across your rotations, but the main approval rests with your department.

  • Please ensure you follow the same process for Bank Holidays which you will also need to request on Healthroster. If you do not book your bank holidays on Allocate, you risk going over your annual leave entitlement.

Sickness

  • If you are unwell and cannot attend work, in the first instance please contact your department as soon as possible to let them know you won’t be able to come in.

  • Then you will need to contact us to let us know you are off work.

  •  On your return to work, please contact us so we can arrange a mandatory return to work meeting. This meeting is required by Trust policy and is a supportive measure to ensure that you can access all the help available to you, should you require it, following time off work.

Teaching

  • As a rotational PA, you have protected teaching time on the last Wednesday of every month between 13:00 and 16:00. This is typically run face-to-face at PGMC each month, unless otherwise communicated. As this is protected time, your department should be releasing you and you are expected to attend unless you are on a planned rest day, booked leave or are off work with sickness.
